Read the Spring Progress
In the spring edition of the Progress Newsletter the prevailing theme is lifelong learning. You can read about accommodations that learners can use to prepare for and while taking the GED; an article explaining the findings of a study of the Quictionary Reading Pen; the development of a job-readiness class in Frederick County, and the use of reflective questioning in the classroom. Other articles include more information about the summer VAILL institutes and Learning Disabilities workshops offered by the Resource Center.

The Virginia Adult Institutes for Lifelong Learning (VAILL) brochure is now available online at www.vcu.edu/aelweb/VAILL! Read about the themes, locations, and learning opportunities planned for each of the three regional summer institutes. The online brochure gives details and information for the in-depth sessions, workshops, and mini-sessions. The brochure has registration information including mailing addresses, registration deadlines, and fees for each VAILL. A printer friendly version is also included on the site.

June 10-13-The "Bridges to Practice" train the trainer workshop for teaching the learning disabled (Books #1 and #2) sponsored by Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) will be held in Austin, Texas at the Hilton North, 6000 Middle Fiskville Road. Workshop participants will make their own reservations by calling 800-347-0330 or 512-451-5757 for rooms reserved for "Bridges to Practice" at $80.00 state rate for single rooms. Super Shuttle service from the Austin Airport to the Hilton is $12.00 one-way. Times of the worshop are the following: June 10th. 1:00-5:00 PM, June 11th, 8:00-5:00PM, June 12th, 8:00-5:00PM, and June 13th. 8:00-1:00PM. Workplace Skills for the Adult Learner: An Integrated Curriculum is a project funded by the Verizon corporation and produced by George Mason University. This six-week curriculum covers the academic and technical skills needed for GED preparation and sustainable employment. The curriculum integrates and reinforces job readiness, office technology, and academic skills. Emphasis is placed on building self-confidence and interpersonal skills through self-assessment, goal setting, simulations and team building activities. The teaching approaches include direct instruction of specific skills and hands-on activities.

Budget talks dominate State Board of Community Colleges Meeting
The NCCCS, like other state agencies, has been asked to identify where system-wide cuts of four to ten percent would be made and detail how those cuts would affect operations. The Governor’s goal is to not affect the classroom, but Lancaster told the members that the classroom cannot be avoided, even at the four percent level.

Virginia Adult Education Awards
The Office of Adult Education & Literacy is calling for nominations for the 2002 Virginia Adult Education Awards. Eligible nominees must be affiliated with public adult education programs--ABE, GED, ESOL, Workforce, and Family Literacy--who contribute to their program in an outstanding or unique way. The packet may be downloaded here as a PDF using the Adobe Acrobat Reader or here as a Microsoft Word document. The deadline for nominations is April 1, 2002.
